A model sailboat can be the perfect thing to accent the décor of a room, inspire a library or study, or cheer up any way ward sailor.
There’s a wide selection of sailboats to choose from, and there are many factors to consider. To the untrained eye, a model sailboat is just a model sailboat: but to the trained observer a model sailboat is a real thing of beautiful, artfully and painstakingly crafted to replicate the real thing on a miniature scale. Some of my favorites are the Sovereign of the Seas, the HMS Victory, the San Felipe, the WASA and the USS Constitution.
Sovereign of the Seas
The Sovereign of the Seas is modeled after a ship in the armada of King Charles I of England. It was one of the most legendary ships to sail the seas in the 17th Century. The Sovereign of the Seas only sailed until 1697, but she left quite a bit of inspiration to model sailboat makers all over the world.
HMS Victory
The HMS Victory is a Tall Ship from the British Royal Navy and was led by Admiral Nelson. The HMS Victory was a fighting ship and she took down many adversaries all over the world. A model version should hold true to the real style of the ship, since it is the oldest commissioned warship in the world.
San Felipe
It is rumored that Spain’s King Philip V commissioned the San Felipe in 1690, but some people doubt the validity of those claims. Either way, the model sailboat San Felipe has been inspiring model makers all over the world for years. The design is of a Tall Ship ready to sail!
WASA
King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden commissioned the WASA or Vasa in 1626. However, the ship sank at sea after sailing less than a nautical mile. Regardless, the design of this ship has inspired model builders and has made its way onto my list of favorite model ships. The ship was recovered with a mostly-intact hull and was set up in a museum in Sweden. Now, it’s Sweden’s most popular tourist attraction. Since 1961, over 29 million visitors have been by to see this glorious ship. With a model, you can have a replica right in your home!
USS Constitution
Also known as “Old Ironsides,” The USS Constitution is not only one of the most famous ships in the US Navy, but it is also still setting sail today! The USS Constitution is a grand example of a model sailboat, and adds a patriotic flair to any American Library. Old Ironsides has been an inspiration to American culture and many songs and poems have been written about it.
Any sailboat that is made with love and devotion to the craft, keeping integrity to the design of the ship, will be a good pick for you. A model sailboat can be the perfect accent to your space, but if you’re feeling really gutsy, you could always try putting together your own!
